Movie producer,
Socrate Safo has said that he contributed to the demise of the movie industry.
The Akan
movie industry has seen a decline in its profit margin over the years. And according to the movie producer, he is
partly at fault. Speaking in an interview on Hitz FM, he said that, he
initially thought that it was more lucrative to sell your movie to a television
station in order to gain free advert for a new movie.
“…We gave a
film like Ghost tears to GBC and they gave us space to advertise our new
movies. Instead of going to pay for it, we thought it was cheaper for us.
However, we
were so smart that outsmarting the TV stations so they will give us advert space, attached with money. That was what we did and everybody jumped on it, what happened?
The TV stations started owning the films.”
He said producers
used to sell 100,000 copies of DVD in the market and today they are not able to
sell 5,000 copies. He however stated that they had learnt their lessons and
wished the young producers would listen to advice.
